I’m Not Going to Cover Costs for Stepdaughter’s Wedding Following Her Father’s Death

Blending families is always a challenge, and this story exemplifies it. A stepdad formed a strong bond with two of his wife’s children, but one remained distant. Years later, a heated dispute over wedding expenses reignites all the unresolved family tensions. Here’s what truly unfolded. A Reddit user disclosed the whole story:

My wife divorced her ex when her three kids were young. She met me a few years later, and we dated for two years before she introduced me to her kids. Two of the kids really hit it off with me, but Kelly did not like me. It started with passive-aggressive stuff, but it became much worse when her dad passed away. She did not take it well, resulting in a lot of outbursts. I wasn’t living there at this time. She went into therapy, but overall, it didn’t seem to help.

She threatened to run away if I married their mom, so l stayed away but continued to date their mom. Over time, the other two kids started to stay at my place to get away from the drama. It was a rough time for them, and we bonded even more. When Kelly was 18, my wife and I decided to stop putting our life on hold and got married. Kelly hated this. The other kids were happy, though. Every interaction I have had with her has been unpleasant, and I do not see her as one of my kids. I eventually adopted her siblings when they were 16 and 17. They asked me. During that time, she destroyed a lot of her siblings stuff for betraying their dad. Now, I rarely see her, and I prefer it that way. The two kids have an on-and-off relationship. I paid for my two kids’ weddings. I got a call from her asking me to pay for her wedding since I paid for the other two. I told her no. This started an argument about how it’s unfair. I had enough and told her to have her dad pay for the wedding. She hung up after calling me some lovely names.
