A frustrated traveler has caused controversy online after recounting an in-flight experience that happened when a woman requested a seat swap so she could sit next to her child.
In an old Reddit post that has resurfaced and gained viral attention, the bewildered flyer wrote about their refusal to accommodate the mother’s request, saying that it was “not my problem they didn’t book together” when approached for a seat change.
The traveler, who remains unidentified, was aboard a trans-Pacific flight departing from Japan, occupying a window seat, while the toddler was seated in the middle seat. The child’s mother sat directly behind them in the same row, also in a middle seat.
The mother specifically asked the traveler to switch seats with her so she could occupy the window seat next to her daughter, while the traveler would take her middle seat in the row behind. However, the traveler simply declined, stating: “Hell to the f**k no.”
Expressing further frustration in the post, the passenger criticized the mother for not trying to look for alternatives within their tour group or from the tour operator. They condemned the mother’s “audacity” in expecting an unequal trade.
Responses to the Reddit post were mixed, with some questioning the traveler’s decision. One person, who referred to themselves as a “parent of a toddler,” was pretty astonished with the original poster’s reluctance to move.
“Sure, someone else could move, but either [way] someone has to move or someone has to sit next to a flying toddler,” the commenter said, saying that the Redditor was “dumb” for being “infuriated” about “a mom trying to watch their own kid,” adding: “I honestly don’t know which is more annoying for other passengers.”
“Why were you so eager to sit next to a stranger’s toddler daughter?” someone else asked.
