5 Ways to Tell if an Egg is Fresh or Rotten

Have you ever wondered if the eggs you’re using for your recipes are still fresh? It can be challenging to determine the freshness of an egg just by looking at its shell. But don’t worry, we have some easy tips to help you determine if an egg is still good to eat or if it has expired. Plus, we’ll share some insights on reducing food waste related to eggs.

When you buy eggs from the supermarket, you’ll find a recommended use-by date on the packaging. If you buy eggs directly from a henhouse, there won’t be an indicated use-by date, but you should know that eggs can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one month after the recommended use-by date. Proper storage helps maintain freshness and prevent mold. Remember to keep your eggs in the refrigerator to maintain their quality and reduce waste.

One way to determine if an egg has expired is by giving it a sniff. Like other fresh products, expired eggs can develop an unpleasant smell. If an egg is past the expiration date and smells off, it’s best not to consume it. However, if it smells normal, you can still enjoy it by preparing a quick omelette or using it in other dishes.

Your eyes can also help you determine if an egg is expired or still edible. Inspect the shell for any signs of mold, such as a powdery or viscous appearance, cracks, or any questionable condition. Additionally, if you crack the egg into a bowl and notice any unusual colors like blue, pink, black, or green in the egg white or yolk, it may indicate bacterial growth. If the egg yolk or white is leaking, it may be aged but still usable. Exercise caution when dealing with eggs in these conditions.

Another technique to check the freshness of an egg is by dipping it in water. Fill a saucepan or salad bowl with water and gently immerse the egg. If it sinks to the bottom and lies flat, it is still fresh. If it remains upright, it should be used quickly. And if it floats to the surface, it is expired. This is because as an egg ages, it loses moisture through pores, causing the air pocket inside to expand. But remember, if you plan to consume the eggs immediately, avoid this experiment as it can remove the protective cuticle on the shell, making the egg more susceptible to bacteria.

Candling is a technique used to assess egg quality or chick development in fertilized eggs. You can try it at home too! Find a cool place with minimal light and have a candle or small flashlight as a light source. Hold the light source towards the end of the egg and tilt and rotate it from left to right. This will allow you to see the contents of the egg. By examining the size of the air bubble, you can gauge the age of the egg. As the egg ages, water evaporates and gases replace it, resulting in a larger air pocket.

There are some foods that can be consumed after the expiration date, such as honey, salt, sugar, vinegar, canned goods, rice, pasta, cornstarch, flour, cereals, dried vegetables, mustard, ketchup, pickles, and spices. However, their taste may change over time. Dairy products like crème fraîche, cheese, milk, and yogurt can also be consumed within one to two weeks after the date mentioned on the packaging, as long as they are unopened and stored properly. For frozen products, as long as the cold chain has been respected, they can be consumed even after the mentioned expiration date.

However, there are certain foods that should not be consumed after the expiration date. These include vacuum-packed raw meats, eggs, fish, cold meats, fresh fruit juices, and raw milk cheeses. These foods are more likely to harbor bacteria and can pose a health risk if consumed past their expiration date. Always trust the expiration dates mentioned on these products to protect your health and avoid foodborne illnesses.

In conclusion, by following these simple tips, you can ensure that the eggs you consume are fresh and avoid any unpleasant surprises. Remember to check the expiration dates, smell the eggs, inspect the shell’s appearance, dip the egg in water, and use the mirage technique. And always practice proper food safety by avoiding foods that may pose health risks after the expiration date.
